Notes

9/7/17

I would like to welcome your child to 7th Grade Language Arts at Jane Addams Middle School! I’m excited about the opportunity to get to know you, as well, and I’m looking forward to a happy and productive school year.

This year in language arts we will focus on the following Reading and Writing standards:

·         Analyzing Elements of Literary and Informative Texts

·         Comparing/Contrasting Elements of Different Texts

·         Citing Evidence

·         Argumentative Writing

·         Comparative Writing

The goals of 7th grade language arts are to cover the Common Core State Standards, to become better readers and writers, and to think critically and creatively.

Please have your child bring the following supplies to school by Tuesday, September 5th:

·         Blue or Black Ink Pen

·         Pencils

·         Yellow Highlighter

·         3-ringed Binder (can be shared with another class)

·         Lined Paper

Students are expected to copy their homework into their planners each day at the start of class. Some examples of activities that will be assigned as homework are: reading, reading logs, comprehension questions, and larger writing assignments. Homework is mandatory. Sometimes homework is collected and graded. Other times, it will be corrected in class. Late work earns 50% of actual credit or less.

When students have been absent, upon returning to school they can go to the bin labeled “Absent Work” and collect any missing assignments.

Students are graded on a weighted system:

30% Tests & Quizzes

25% Homework

25% Classwork

10% Reading Logs

10% Participation

Students are responsible for their language arts grade and should check their grades on PowerSchool on a regular basis. If your child would like to improve his or her grade, he or she may make up any missing or incomplete work for half credit.

Upcoming school events you should be aware of include:

Back to School Night

September 13th

Picture Day

September 19th

Parent Conferences

October 11th-13th

Please mark these dates on your calendar. I hope you will make it a priority this year to attend as many school-sponsored events as possible.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me by email or phone. I also welcome appointments to meet in person. You can contact me at (310) 676-4806 Ex 51032 or ali_mulgrew@lawndalesd.net.

Let’s work together to make this the best year ever!
